The short prayer which is the topic of this post comes from his work Creatures of Light and Darkness, published way back in 1969 (Okay, not way back for everyone--but I was pretty darn young when it first came out). It is some time before you encounter your first creature, and this is vital to the fiendish logic that makes Amnesia tick. The Deep Ocean – A world of darkness where creatures have adapted and nearly all are bioluminescent. Lord of Light, to me, isn't in the same league. Quite a few of the Phoenixes are Eldritch Abominations, strangely enough. The torturously slow-burning first thirty minutes or so act to lull you into a fragile but unavoidable and going insane leaves you much more vulnerable to the creatures. Overall, Roger Zelazny is my favorite SF author, on the strength of his short stories, Isle of the Dead, Call Me Conrad, and Creatures of Light and Darkness. Creatures of Light and Darkness is Roger Zelazny's masterpiece novel of Egyptian mythology and futuristic technology. Duality of light and dark features heavily in Amnesia, but the inspired nuance of its execution leaves Alan Wake's cheap theatrics quivering in the shadows.
